Beauty & Health

What do they have to do with each other?  Well, a lot!

While I believe all women are beautiful naturally as we are, quite a few of us like a little something extra on our face.  Some like a little more….all good. BUT I think everyone should be educated on what they are putting on their skin and the risks involved.

Long before I became a health coach, my personal life coach educated me on the toxic effects of our skin care products. This includes shampoo, makeup, lotions, sunscreens, etc.

I assumed because I was spending lots of money on fancy products that they must be good for me. I could not have been more wrong.

When I became a holistic health coach, I soon learned of the effects of these products and became obsessed with only putting high quality, non-toxic products on my skin.

According to the Environmental Working Group, we put on an average of 12 products onto our skin every day.  These are comprised of nearly 200 different chemicals! This is for women! Men, while they use fewer products, still put about 85 chemicals on their bodies each day.

All of these chemicals can directly affect our health.

While Europe has banned many harmful substances, Canada and the US have banned very few. (Like 1400 compared to 9)  I believe this number is getting a bit better in Canada…but still has a long way to go!

Here is a list of the 10 of the most toxic beauty ingredients to avoid are:

  • Parabens. These are widely used preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast in cosmetic products
  • Synthetic colors
  • Fragrance
  • Phthalates
  • Triclosan
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Toluene.

Now you may say, “but it smells good!”  Yes, it probably does smell good but many of the above chemicals may be causing your body some serious harm.  Some of the effects include inflammation, cancer, ADHD, auto-immune disorders and fertility problems just to name a few.  Many of these diseases and conditions are impacted by hormones which hormone disrupters are the main culprit of these chemicals.

The FDA only looks at each chemical on an individual basis rather than how they interact together.  Remember, each cosmetic item may have a dozen chemicals in it. There is an organization called The Endocrine Disruption Exchange (TEDX) which is a not-for-profit research foundation focused on reducing harmful chemicals in the environment.  They continue to do research in this area.

As well, a great resource is the EWG – skin site www.ewg.org/

What I have learned.

Your inner beauty (how good you feel about yourself and your life) comes pouring out of you and makes you “look” so much more beautiful.  Do you ever notice the women that walks in a room and just has an incredible aura about them? It is not always because she is what society would deem aesthetically beautiful, it is because of her confidence as well as the energy she is emitting.

An interesting story about myself recently and a little mindset checkup.

I had professional photos done 3 years ago for my business and tucked them away because I thought I looked terrible.

I pulled these out a week or two ago and it was like I was seeing the photos for the first time.  I said to myself…..”aaannnd what was it that I didn’t like about them?” I thought they were great.

I am acutely aware of how I present myself and how I talk about myself as I have a daughter that is going to be a teenager this year.  I am grateful that she sees herself as beautiful and while she loves playing with makeup (the artist in her) she really only like a VERY natural look.  When she sees someone with lots of makeup she will always say….I bet they would look better with little or no makeup.

So where do you go from here?

Like I said earlier you can use the EWG site to check out what you currently use as well, research new products.

Some of my favorite brands are: (I am not getting anything for saying this….these are what I truly love!).

Jane Iredale – powder/foundation and blush

Tart – concealer, blush, contour/highlighter, eyeshadows, mascara

pur – Available at Shopper Drug Mart

nude by nature – Available at Shopper Drug Mart (love their neutral lip glosses)

If you have any favorites of your own please feel free to share them in the comments or in the FB Page or Group.
