Set yourself up for your best year ever!
As we approach the new year, it’s the perfect time to cultivate healthy habits that not only enhance our lives but also pave the way for a successful future. Instead of focusing on setting goals right now, how about focusing on habit building. Building great overall habits will in turn help you be more successful when you do set goals.
Here are seven healthy habits to adopt for the New Year:
Embrace the Early Morning Calm
THIS is my favorite thing to do. Being a single parent makes it a bit challenging to always do, but when I can, I am in bliss.
Rising early is more than just getting a head start on your day; it’s about embracing a period of peace and being able to have time to “think”. There is nothing more sweet than the silence when no one else is up. The world is quiet. As I am writing this it reminded me of the early days of the recent pandemic and how peaceful it was with hardly any cars on the road.
Establish a soothing morning ritual, perhaps involving a warm drink, some light stretching, journaling, candlelight or simply enjoying the tranquility. This time is yours to set a positive tone for the day ahead.
Whenever I get the opportunity to start my day like this, my day is exponentially better as I am less stressed and much more productive.
Cultivate Daily Gratitude

Gratitude is everything.
When it comes to manifesting your desires, what you put out there is what you get back. When you are grateful for all that you have, you will receive more. When you whine and complain…you will get more of the negative.
Digital Detox for Better Sleep
In our hyper-connected world, it’s crucial to disconnect for better rest. Try putting away digital devices an hour before bed (at least) and if you can, turn off the wifi on your phone.
Also, consider wearing a sleep mask to block out any disruptive light, ensuring a deeper and more restful sleep.
Getting a better sleep is instrumental in having a productive day, in having a healthy body and it’s even linked to a healthy weight.
Create a Daily To-Do List
Organize your day with a to-do list or better yet, schedule your tasks directly into your daytimer. This simple practice helps you prioritize tasks, manage your time more efficiently, and provides a sense of accomplishment as you check off completed items. I love checklists because it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
There are different theories on to-do lists so try it and see if it works for you.
One of the things I do suggest in this area is to document your top 2-3 things you want to accomplish in the day. Setting this intention at the start of the day will help you stay on track and actually get things done.
Embark on a Fitness Journey
You had to know this one would have to show up on the list! LOL. This isn’t about going to the gym everyday. It’s about moving your body. Finding something that works for you is key. It can be as simple as stretching as part of your morning routine. The idea here is to simply start doing something that works for you.
Exercise isn’t just about physical health; it’s a cornerstone of mental and emotional wellbeing. Find an exercise program that resonates with you. It could be yoga, walking, or something more vigorous. The key is consistency and enjoyment.
Meditate for Clarity and Focus
Meditation is another habit that once you do it for a period of time, you will crave it.
It’s not about turning off all thoughts…you’re human after all. When I find myself having way too many thoughts, I simply imagine those thoughts floating away on a cloud.
Just 10 minutes of meditation a day can significantly impact your mental health. It helps in reducing stress, improving focus, and fostering a greater sense of peace and clarity in your life.
Commit to Reading Daily
Reading expands the mind and nourishes the soul. I would suggest aiming for at least 30 minutes a day.
Here are my favourites to get you started. For fiction lovers, try “The Nightingale,” “The Covenant of Water,” or “The Secret Daughter.” For non-fiction enthusiasts, explore titles like “The Secrets of the Millionaire Mind,” “Atomic Habits,” or any book from the “Go Givers” series. These reads offer insights into personal growth, success mindset, and the art of living a fulfilling life.
Adopting these habits for the New Year is about setting the foundation for a lifestyle that aligns with your aspirations. Remember, it’s the small, consistent steps that lead to significant changes.
When you combine these with Goals, Intentions and the Universe you have a great recipe for a life of flow and ease.
