Welcome to a New Year!

We are already heading into our 3rd week of the year and if you are one of the people that set goals and have already derailed from accomplishing your goals, then this article is for you.  Or, if you are someone who does not set goals because “it never works out”, then here is a little inspiration for you too!

One of the reasons why we are not always successful at our goals is because often they require that we change our behaviours.

Changing our habits and behaviours may be easier than you think. There are many things you can do to be successful with your goals.  In this article we will look at three ways to use visualization, words and motivational quotes to change our thought patterns and behaviours to achieve your goals. 

Let’s take a look at how our thoughts work.

If you believe something to be easy you will have little struggle in accomplishing it. However, when you imagine something to be difficult to accomplish, then your struggle increases.  The way our subconscious works is that if we imagine that it is difficult to change a specific behaviour, then we will always find experiences that will justify that belief.  Our subconscious is always looking for situations and things that will validate its beliefs. 

This is how it works in real life:

You have set a goal to start exercising more and here are your first thoughts to yourself:

“This is the day I start exercising. When things get difficult, I will not make excuses, but instead I will find a way to get myself going.  It’ll be tough at first, but I’m going to give it a try.” 

This thought pattern will make things even more difficult. Why? 

Let’s break down this statement to ourselves more to see the thought patterns and beliefs already in place. We have determined to do something good for ourselves, but we do ourselves a disservice by choosing certain negative thought patterns, beliefs and words that go along with it. 

We have said, 

“When things get difficult….”  (This is already assuming that there will be difficult moments!) 

“It’ll be tough at first…” (This is already assuming it will be tough to at first!) 

“…but I’m going to give it a try.” (the word “try” actually has a negative vibration to it.  Replacing it with “do” will get you much further!)

Here are three things you can do to help change your habits and behaviours.  

#1 Mindset Matters 

Taking some time to reflect on your own self talk and coming up with new phrases is a great starting place.   Every day take time to visualize the outcome of what you want.  Visualize you being successful.  As soon as you start thinking that you will never be able to do it….stop right there and change that thought pattern and replace it with a positive thought.  

The above statement could be rephrased as follows: 

“This is the day I start exercising.  I will show up at my scheduled times, holding myself in my highest integrity.”

#2 Choose a Power Word

This is sometimes like a word of the year but it could also be specific to a goal.  Choose a power word that you can focus on for a day, week, or month.  Remember to keep it simple.  Choose any word as long as it relates to your situation. (Attitude, Energy, Action, Believe…) 

#3 Motivational Quotes

With your power word in mind, search for motivational and inspirational quotes that resonate with you that relate to your goal.  These quotes should be powerful enough to change your thought patterns every time you read them.  You want them to drive you when you can’t drive yourself. They will be constant reminders for you to take action.

Find the quotes that work for you and write them down, carry them with you and read them over and over.  To make this work for me, I type the into the alarm on my cell phone and set the timer for several times a day.  A great way to remember to read them.  And don’t just read them..take a deep breath in and internalize them as you say them to yourself.  This is another great time to visualize what you want as you say the phrase/quote.

Through changing thought patterns, over time, you will be able to accomplish many of your goals you set for yourself.  Accomplishing the goal involved will take more than just thinking about it but does begin with thoughts. The thoughts then permeated into your actions.  Action is equally as important.

Here are the three ways again to achieve your goals: 

1. Decided to change your way of thinking about a behaviour.  Rephrase your thoughts in a more positive way. 

2. Choose a word to focus on to change that behaviour for a period of time. 

3. Find a minimum of three motivational or inspirational quotes related to that specific goal that are powerful enough to change your current thought patterns the moment you read them. Meditate on them and repeat them, silently or out loud, every chance you get. 

The first step to what you want to accomplish is checking in with your mindset and the thought patterns and beliefs associated with your behaviour.  And remember, if you have derailed from your goals, you can always pick up where you left off!  Let’s make this year your most amazing year ever.
